Watch her detailed tutorial video below, and let’s get started!
Step 1: Preparing the Bauble
Donna begins by painting a cardboard bauble with Dixie Belle chalk paint in the color Cotton. It’s important to start with a white or light base when using decoupage napkins or rice paper. This allows the colors to stay vibrant and prevents them from becoming muddy or dull.
Step 2: Adding the Vintage Rice Paper
Using the beautiful green and black distressed rice paper from DecoupageNapkins.com, Donna decoupages three of the six panels of the ornament. She uses Polyvine Decorators Varnish as both an adhesive and a varnish, painting a layer under and over the rice paper to ensure it adheres well and dries clear without yellowing. Once dry, she sands away the excess paper for a clean edge. Remember to always sand in a downward motion to avoid damaging your decoupaged surface!
Step 3: Creating Textured Lace Panels
For the other three panels, Donna uses cream paste spread over a texture mat to create a lace-like effect. Once the paste is dry, she carefully cuts it to fit the blank panels of the bauble. Donna uses tacky glue to attach the lace pieces, making sure everything stays securely in place.
Step 4: Painting and Antiquing the Lace
Next, Donna paints the lace panels with Pentart paint in Country Green, which matches the rice paper beautifully. After it dries, she seals the whole ornament with Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish to add a satin finish. To add depth, Donna mixes a black paint with glazing medium and applies it to the edges and lace sections, immediately wiping off the excess. This antiquing technique makes the details pop and gives the ornament a vintage, aged look.
Step 5: Adding Angels and Gold Accents
Donna adds three angels, molded from Das clay using a silicone mold. She attaches these to the lace panels while the clay is still wet so they can conform to the shape of the bauble. Once dry, she paints the angels and lace panels with Pentart Metallic Gold Paint for a rich, festive feel. Donna then applies a layer of metallic wax rub—first aged brass, followed by white pearl—to enhance the highlights on the angels and lace, adding shimmer and dimension.
Step 6: Final Touches
To finish off the ornament, Donna adds a beautiful gold tassel to the bottom and uses Das clay to mold small leaves, which she attaches to both the top and bottom to hide any raw edges or glue spots. She also glues delicate gold cord along the lace edges for extra definition and charm. Finally, she makes lovely black and gold bows using her Bowdabra tool, which she attaches to the top and bottom of the bauble for a festive touch.
