How to Make a Boutique-Style Christmas Owl Bauble

How to Make a Boutique-Style Christmas Owl Bauble

What if you could turn a plain plastic ornament into a boutique-style treasure? This tutorial shows you how to transform a simple bauble into a dazzling 3D white owl ornament—perfect for bringing sparkle and elegance to your Christmas tree.

Our talented friend Donna from Mason Creations etc. walks us through every step of this magical project, blending decoupage, clay, glitter, and embellishments into a one-of-a-kind holiday keepsake.

Watch the video below to see how it’s done.

Step 1 – Reverse Decoupage the Owl

Donna begins with a round plastic ornament, applying Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer as adhesive. She positions a stunning owl rice paper design, pressing it smoothly so the image shows clearly from the outside. Slits in the paper help it lay flat against the curved dome.

Step 2 – Add Roses and Leaves for 3D Effect

On the other half of the ornament, she fussy cuts roses and leaves from the rice paper and applies them with varnish in a traditional decoupage method. This layering creates a dimensional look when the two halves are joined together.

Step 3 – Seal and Glitter

After drying, Donna seals the surface with Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish. Using the varnish as glue, she adds shimmery glitter to leaf veins and rose details, giving the ornament a frosted, wintry touch.

Step 4 – Create a Decorative Back

To finish the back, Donna rolls out Das clay thinly, embosses it with a wood-grain texture, and glues it onto the ornament. Once dry, she paints it white, seals it with varnish, then antiques it using Pentart Country Blue Paint mixed with glazing medium. A layer of Sizzix Silver Luster Wax highlights the texture beautifully.

Step 5 – Assemble and Embellish

The ornament halves are glued together, and a silver braided trim hides the seam while a tassel hangs from the base. Donna then uses her Bowdabra tool to make layered bows with greenery, gold berries, and tiny stickers. Finally, she adds rhinestone snowflakes and buttons for extra sparkle.

The result? A luxury-style white owl ornament that looks boutique-bought but is handmade with love.
