How to Make a Snowflake Candle That Steals the Show

Have you ever wondered how to turn a plain candle into a Christmas showpiece?
In today’s tutorial, our talented crafting partner, Donna at Mason Creations etc., shows how to create a dazzling Christmas snowflake candle using rice paper, clay embellishments, and shimmering accents. This project is perfect for beginner crafters who want to make a holiday piece that looks boutique-worthy but is easy to create.

Step 1 – Prepping the Candle

Start with a plain glass prayer candle. Warm the label with a heat gun or blow dryer, then peel it away. Wipe the surface with alcohol wipes to remove oils, and scrub away any printed numbers with a sponge and glass cleaner. Brush on Polyvine Multi Surface Lacquer (Dead Flat Finish) to create a smooth, frosted surface that will hold your rice paper beautifully.

Step 2 – Adding the Snowflake Rice Paper

Tear the edges of your snowflake rice paper using a water brush—this makes the paper blend seamlessly into the background. Position it around the candle so the edges meet with minimal overlap. Apply Polyvine Decorators Varnish directly over the rice paper to adhere it to the glass, saturating the paper for an even, bubble-free finish.

Step 3 – Sealing the Base Layer

Once dry, seal the candle with Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish (Satin Finish). This protective coat is heat-resistant, moisture-resistant, and food-safe—perfect for projects like this.

Step 4 – Creating Snowflake Embellishments

Press Das Air Dry Clay into a Re-design snowflake mold, smooth it with water, then freeze for 20 minutes. Pop the snowflakes out and glue them to the candle while still damp so they mold to the glass shape. Use painter’s tape to hold them in place while they dry overnight.

Step 5 – Painting for a Crisp Finish

Once the clay is dry, paint the snowflakes with Dixie Belle Cotton Chalk Paint. This adds an even texture and bright base for your next steps.

Step 6 – Foil & Sparkle Accents

Apply Decofoil transfer gel to the raised details of the snowflakes with a sponge dauber. Once dry and tacky, rub on silver foil for a shimmering highlight. Add clear rhinestones to the snowflake centers for extra sparkle.

Step 7 – Metallic Edging & Final Seal

Paint the candle’s top edge with Pentart Silver Metallic Paint for an elegant frame. Seal the entire candle—including the rhinestones—with Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish to lock everything in place.

Step 8 – Finishing Touches

Glue glittery silver trim to the top and bottom edges for a final festive touch.
