How to Create a Gingerbread Board That Looks Good Enough to Eat
What’s sweeter than gingerbread at Christmas? How about a handmade gingerbread cutting board that looks good enough to eat! With napkins, clay embellishments, and a few festive accents, this project will become the cutest holiday piece in your kitchen.
Our crafty friend Donna from Mason Creations etc. takes us step by step through this heartwarming project, showing how to combine decoupage with clay, paint, and detail work for a holiday keepsake.
Watch the video below to see how it all comes together.

Step 1 – Prep the Board
Donna begins by gluing two thin cutting boards together with Aleene’s Tacky Glue for extra sturdiness. Once dry, she paints the surface with Dixie Belle Cotton Chalk Paint, giving it two coats to create the perfect white base for napkin decoupage.
Step 2 – Decoupage the Gingerbread Napkin
Using the plastic wrap method, Donna places the gingerbread napkin face down on plastic, sprays it with water, and smooths out wrinkles. With Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish as adhesive, she transfers the napkin onto the board, achieving a nearly wrinkle-free application.
Step 3 – Mold the Gingerbread People
Next, she uses Das clay and a gingerbread mold to create a boy and girl figure, freezing the clay for easy removal. Small cookie cutters are also pressed into clay “dough” for added accents. Once dry, the pieces are painted terra cotta with shading, rosy cheeks, red bows, and icing details.
Step 4 – Add Depth and Antiquing
The gingerbread figures are sealed with varnish, then antiqued with a Folkart Wooden Bucket Brown medium, which settles into crevices to give them 3D depth. To help them stand out against the napkin, Donna dabs Dixie Belle Cotton with a stiff stencil brush, creating the look of flour dusting.
Step 5 – Decorate the Mini Rolling Pin
A tiny rolling pin is decoupaged with a Merry Christmas rice paper design, sealed with Polyvine, and edged with Eternal Gold Wax for a festive shimmer. A dainty satin bow finishes the look.
Step 6 – Assemble the Holiday Display
Finally, Donna brings everything together—gluing down the clay embellishments, the rolling pin, and a layered bow made with her Bowdabra tool. She adds pine cones, red berries, and greenery for a cozy holiday touch.
The finished piece is a gingerbread cutting board decoration that brings warmth and holiday cheer to any kitchen.
