Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Prepare Your Surface
Start by cleaning the outside of your glass bowl with an alcohol wipe to remove dust, dirt, or fingerprints. Then, apply Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer in a dead-flat finish to the glass. This serves as a primer, ensuring excellent adhesion for paint and decoupage materials while reducing surface shine. Let it dry overnight for best results.

Step 2: Choose and Prepare Your Rice Paper
For this project, Donna uses rose-patterned rice paper from DecoupageNapkins.com. Tear the paper into small pieces using a water brush to create soft, blended edges. This technique ensures the paper lies flat on curved surfaces and minimizes visible seams.

Step 3: Apply the Adhesive and Rice Paper
Using Polyvine Decorator’s Varnish, Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer or Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish  as your adhesive, brush a thin layer onto the glass where the rice paper will be applied. Spray the rice paper lightly with water to make it pliable, then place it on the glass with the printed side facing inward. Smooth the paper gently with the varnish to eliminate wrinkles and bubbles. Continue this process around the bowl, overlapping pieces slightly for full coverage. Let this layer dry.  Next add a final top coat of Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish which will help seal it for the next steps and prevent bleed-through.

Step 4: Add a Base Layer of Paint
Once the rice paper is securely adhered, apply Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in the color Cotton (white) to the outside of the glass. This creates an opaque background that enhances the rice paper’s design. Allow the paint to dry completely between two coats.

Step 5: Create the Outer Design
For the exterior, Donna uses a marble-patterned rice paper, also from DecoupageNapkins.com. Tear it into small pieces and apply using the same adhesive and blending techniques as before. Sand any excess paper from the edges with fine-grit sandpaper for a clean finish.

Step 6: Seal and Protect
Seal the entire piece with two coats of Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish in a satin finish. This varnish is water-based, non-toxic, and food-safe, making it ideal for decorative and functional projects. Let each coat dry for at least an hour before applying the next.

Step 7: Add Metallic Accents
To give the rim a luxurious touch, Donna applies Pentart Gold Paint using a sponge, followed by a coat of Decor Metallic Wax in Eternal for a polished gold effect. Buff the wax with a soft cloth to achieve a high shine.
