Master the Art of Crackle Painting and Rub-On Transfers

Have You Ever Wondered How to Create a Crackled Vintage Masterpiece?

Donna from Mason Creations Etc., a talented craft instructor and a cherished part of the DecoupageNapkins.com community, shows us how to make a beautiful crackled decor piece using rub-on transfers and other craft supplies. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting, this tutorial will guide you step by step. Watch her video below to see the process in action and follow along with our detailed instructions!

Step 1: Paint Your Base Start by painting your surface, like a house-shaped board, with Pentart Paint in Earthy Brown. This will be the color that peeks through the cracks. Don’t forget to paint the edges for a polished look. Let the paint dry completely before moving on.

Step 2: Apply the Crackle Medium To create the crackle effect, brush on a coat of  One Step Crackle Medium. Cover the entire surface evenly, including the edges. Allow it to dry for about an hour before proceeding.

Step 3: Add the Contrasting Layer For the crackle to pop, use a light color like Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Drop Cloth as the top layer. As you paint, cracks will begin to form immediately. Avoid brushing over the same area twice, as this can disrupt the cracking process. Let the piece dry completely to reveal the stunning effect.

Step 4: Apply Rub-On Transfers Select your favorite designs from our rub-on transfers collection. Donna uses Garden Marvels by Decor by Redesign. Cut out the designs, remove the backing, and carefully position them on the surface. Use the included stick to burnish the transfers onto the board, lifting the plastic sheet gradually. If part of the transfer doesn't stick, lay it back down and burnish again until it’s fully adhered.

Step 5: Seal for Durability Seal your work with Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer. This product ensures the transfers are secure and won’t peel or lift over time. It also provides water, stain, heat and abrasion resistance for long-lasting beauty. Let the lacquer dry for an hour, then apply Polyvine Heavy-Duty Wood Varnish in Satin Finish for added protection. This varnish is water-based, low-odor, and resistant to moisture, heat, and UV light, making it perfect for kitchen projects.

Step 6: Add Final Touches Using a bow-making tool, create a beautiful bow with your choice of ribbons using a mini Bowdabra bow maker. Secure it to the top of the board and embellish the edges with twine or decorative ribbon. These details add a rustic charm that completes the piece.
