DIY Valentine’s Wall Hanging: A Beautiful Decoupage Project

Are you ready to craft something truly unforgettable for Valentine’s Day? Imagine creating a one-of-a-kind decoration that radiates charm, love, and warmth—just like the holiday itself! This DIY Valentine wall hanging is the perfect way to add a romantic flair to your space or surprise someone special. With Donna from Mason Creations Etc. as your guide, you’ll discover how to transform a simple filigree heart plaque into a stunning masterpiece, even if it’s your first time trying decoupage. Watch her inspiring tutorial below and follow the steps to make your very own heartfelt creation!

Step 1: Prepare Your Base

Start by painting the bottom section of the heart plaque with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Cotton. Spritz your sponge with a bit of water to help the paint glide smoothly. Remember, painting the base white ensures your decoupage design remains vibrant and avoids a muddy finish. For the top filigree section, use Pentart Paint in Off-White to create a soft, neutral contrast.

Step 2: Tear and Place Your Rice Paper

Choose a beautiful rice paper design that speaks to you. Using a water brush, outline and tear the rice paper around your desired design. Tearing the edges blends it seamlessly with the background. Once ready, place the rice paper on the bottom section of the plaque and secure it with Polyvine Decorators Varnish, which doubles as an adhesive and a protective topcoat.

Step 3: Blend Colors for a Cohesive Look

Match the rice paper colors by blending Pentart Country Blue and Country Green with a bit of white. Use a sponge to softly fade the colors around the decoupage design, creating a harmonious gradient. Donna’s tip: Keep separate sponges for each color and layer gradually until satisfied.

Step 4: Add Shimmer and Dimension

To make the filigree section stand out, apply Dixie Belle Pearlescent Glaze using a sponge. Then, enhance the edges of the heart with Metallic Wax Rub in White Gold. This adds subtle shimmer and depth, perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Step 5: Assemble and Embellish

Attach the two plaque sections using Tacky Glue, securing them with clips until dry. Use E6000 Glue to add a decorative ball chain along the seam for a polished finish. Embellish the heart further with a bow made from the Mini Bowdabra Tool, topped with a tiny metal key and Prima Paper Flowers that match the rice paper design.

Step 6: Seal for Durability

Protect your masterpiece with Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish in a satin finish. Apply two to three coats with a Polyvine brush, letting each coat dry for an hour. This varnish ensures your wall hanging is moisture-resistant, UV-safe, and ready to spread Valentine’s cheer for years to come.
