Easter Egg on candelabra decoupaged with rice paper featuring dove and cross

Turn a Foam Egg into an Easter Showstopper!

Have you ever dreamed of turning a simple foam egg into a dazzling Easter masterpiece that steals the show? Get ready to tap your creativity with this uplifting decoupage project! We’re thrilled to bring you an exclusive tutorial from our talented affiliate, Donna at Mason Creations etc., who’s sharing her expertise on crafting a stunning foam Easter egg decoration. This project blends simple materials with a touch of skill, perfect for beginners eager to dive into the art of decoupage. With just a foam egg, some rice paper, and a few clever techniques, you’ll create a piece that’s both beautiful and personal—no advanced crafting experience required!

Before we explore the steps, take a moment to watch Donna’s fantastic video tutorial below for a visual guide to this delightful craft.

Step 1: Set the Stage with a Sturdy Base

Start with a smooth 6-inch foam Easter egg—smooth is key for a flawless decoupage finish. Grab a glass candle holder and use a hot glue gun to attach the egg securely on top. Next, prep the glass base by wiping it down with an alcohol wipe to remove any dirt or fingerprints. Brush on a layer of Polyvine’s multi-surface lacquer in dead flat finish from DecoupageNapkins.com to prime the shiny surface. This ensures your paint sticks perfectly without chipping. Let it dry overnight for the best results, then coat the foam egg with a generous layer of gesso from our site to prime it for decoupage. Give it an hour to dry.

Step 2: Add a Pop of Color to the Base
Once the lacquer’s dry, paint the glass base with Dixie Belle chalk paint in Cotton, a creamy white shade. This paint glides on smoothly and covers beautifully—let it dry for about 30 minutes. You’ll love how it sets the tone for your Easter creation!

Step 3: Decoupage with Delightful Rice Paper
Now for the fun part! Select a gorgeous Easter-themed rice paper from our vast collection. While you’re at it, consider grabbing the Asket Rice Paper Collection  from our site for the next step. Its small, detailed images are just the right size for decorating eggs, making your project even more charming. Use a water brush to gently tear out your chosen design—torn edges blend better than cut ones. Since the egg is curved, make small tears near objects in the image so the paper can overlap and lay flat. Apply Polyvine’s decorators varnish (a fantastic adhesive from our site) starting at the center of the paper, working outward. Smooth it down with a small piece of a Ziplock bag sprayed with water to prevent sticking. Layer background pieces first, then add focal images on top for depth. Let the varnish soak through to secure everything.

Step 4: Fill and Blend for a Seamless Look
Cover any white patches on the egg with coordinating rice paper tearing pieces freestyle and overlapping them for a smooth fit. Seal it all with a coat of Polyvine heavy duty wood varnish, letting it dry for an hour. To blend the papers, mix paints like Pentart light brown, turquoise blue, and Dixie Belle drop cloth (all from our shop) until you love the shade. Dab it on with a stiff brush, rubbing gently to soften harsh lines, and watch your design come together beautifully.

Step 5: Enhance the Base with a Crackle Finish
For a touch of elegance, paint the base with Pentart metallic white gold, which covers in one coat! After an hour of drying, apply Folkart one-step crackle medium, let it sit for another hour, then top it with Pentart light brown paint. Brush it on once to let cracks form naturally, revealing the metallic sheen underneath. Finish with two or three coats of Polyvine heavy duty wood varnish in satin finish, drying an hour between each coat, for a durable, shiny result.

Step 6: Add the Finishing Flourishes
Tie a ribbon around the base, then use a mini Bowdabra tool to craft a layered bow. Decorate it with paper flowers and a silver cross enhanced with a dab of white gold rub. Brush antiquing wax in soot into the stand’s lower areas for depth, wiping off excess, and highlight the high spots with more white gold rub. Attach the bow, and your masterpiece is complete!
