Transform Ordinary Sea Shells into Art with Decoupage Techniques

Step 1: Preparing the Shell

To start, Donna cleans the seashell using alcohol to ensure it’s free from any dust or oils. Next, she brushes on Polyvine’s Multi-surface Lacquer—available in a dead flat finish to remove any shine. This primer creates an excellent base for the rice paper, ensuring the paint or decoupage glue adheres perfectly without peeling or chipping.

Step 2: Preparing the Rice Paper

Select a beautiful rice paper for your project, then carefully tear it to fit the shell’s curved surface. Donna advises tearing the paper rather than cutting it, as this allows the edges to blend seamlessly with the shell, avoiding any visible lines once adhered.

Step 3: Decoupaging the Shell

Donna uses Polyvine Heavy-duty Wood varnish as both her adhesive and final varnish. This versatile product not only helps to adhere the rice paper smoothly but also provides a crystal-clear finish that resists yellowing over time. After positioning the rice paper on the shell, she applies a generous coat of varnish on top, ensuring the edges are well-saturated to prevent lifting.

Step 4: Adding Finishing Touches

Once the decoupage is dry, Donna enhances the shell’s edges with Pentart’s white gold paint for a luxurious, high-end look. She then creates a decorative bow using 10-minute casting resin, colored with mica powders, and attaches it to the shell using E6000 glue. For added detail, she applies glass bead gel around the flower petals, giving them a dewy, morning-fresh appearance.

Step 5: Sealing and Finalizing the Project

Donna seals her work with another coat of Polyvine heavy-duty wood varnish in a satin finish. To add a final touch of elegance, she places a rhinestone in the center of the bow. The result is a beautifully decoupaged seashell, perfect for display.
