Turning a Simple Shell into Coastal Charm

Have you ever picked up a simple seashell and imagined it could become something beautiful?
This project begins with an ordinary shell and turns it into a delicate coastal keepsake using napkin decoupage, soft gold details, and treated paper roses. The result is a charming decorative dish that feels elegant, romantic, and perfect for spring or beach-inspired décor.

Step 1: Preparing the Shell

The shell is first cleaned with an alcohol wipe to remove oils and residue. Because shells are slick surfaces, they are coated with Polyvine Multi Surface Lacquer (Dead Flat). This product removes shine and creates a gripping layer that allows paints and decoupage papers to adhere properly.

For best results, the lacquer is left to dry overnight.

Step 2: Applying the Napkin Design

A decorative napkin is separated so only the printed top layer is used. This thin layer allows the pattern to blend seamlessly into the surface.

The napkin is placed onto the shell and Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish (Satin) is brushed gently over the top. Unlike traditional decoupage glue, this varnish penetrates through the napkin and adheres it without requiring adhesive underneath, reducing wrinkles and bubbles.

After drying for several hours, excess napkin is removed by sanding downward along the shell edge for a perfectly clean line.

Step 3: Creating a Stable Base

Since shells tend to rock on flat surfaces, a small circle of wooden beads is glued to the underside. The shell is placed on top of the beads and adjusted until it sits level.

Once dry, the beads are painted with Pentart Gold paint and sealed with varnish so the base blends beautifully with the rest of the design.

Step 4: Adding Gold Edging

To give the shell a refined finish, Redesign Decor Wax in Eternal Gold is applied around the edge using a sponge dauber. The flat sponge edge helps create a smooth, even line that highlights the natural curve of the shell.

Step 5: Strengthening Paper Flowers

Paper roses are transformed into durable decorative elements by coating them with Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish. Each flower is dipped into the varnish and allowed to drip dry overnight.

This process stiffens the petals, making the flowers more durable and even cleanable with a damp cloth.

A second coat of varnish is brushed on after the first has dried.

Step 6: Adding Gold Highlights

Once dry, the roses are lightly highlighted with Eternal Gold wax along the edges of the petals. The wax catches the raised areas and creates a beautiful gilded effect that gives the flowers a rich finish.

Step 7: Assembling the Decorative Arrangement

The roses are arranged along the left side of the shell, leaving space on the right so the shell can still function as a small dish. Dried branches add natural texture, and a butterfly accent completes the arrangement.

The finished seashell becomes a lovely decorative trinket dish perfect for holding small jewelry pieces or simply displaying as a coastal-inspired accent.
