Decorative floral lantern with candle, featuring pastel flowers, leaves, and gold accents.

From Simple Jar to Stunning Lantern

Have you ever taken something as simple as a mason jar and imagined it glowing with detail and personality?
This lantern project transforms an everyday jar into a decorative piece filled with layered clay flowers, soft blended color, and subtle sparkle. It’s a beautiful way to create something eye-catching using simple materials and a few thoughtful techniques.

Be sure to watch the full video tutorial below before getting started.

Step 1: Preparing the Base

The mason jar lid is lightly sanded to help the glue adhere, then attached to a wooden base using Aleene’s Tacky Glue. Before decorating, the jar is cleaned with an alcohol wipe to remove any oils or residue.

This step ensures everything sticks properly and gives you a clean starting surface.

Step 2: Creating Clay Embellishments

Using Das air-dry clay, decorative pieces are pressed into molds and smoothed with water. The molds are placed in the freezer for about 20 minutes so the clay releases cleanly without damaging details.

Column-style embellishments are added around the jar, and a raised clay form is created at the top to support the flower arrangement. The clay is attached while still damp using Aleene’s Tacky Glue so it conforms to the jar’s shape.

Each section is allowed to dry fully before moving on to the next to avoid shifting or flattening the design.

Step 3: Building the Floral Top

Large molded flowers are layered at the top of the jar, slightly overlapping to create a natural look. A plastic ring is embedded into the clay so the lantern can be hung.

Because the clay flowers are heavier, they are supported while drying to maintain their shape.

Step 4: Painting the Base Colors

Once the clay is fully dry, all embellishments are painted using:

These base colors create a soft, neutral foundation that allows the next layers to stand out. The painted clay will be given a coat of Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish.

Step 5: Blending Color on the Flowers

Custom paint blends are created using Magnolia, Rose, and Yellow Ochre to achieve soft, natural tones. The paint is thinned with water so it applies like a wash rather than full coverage.

Colors are layered and blended directly on the petals, allowing each tone to show through. A light fuchsia wash is added near the center of the flowers for depth.

Step 6: Antiquing for Depth

After sealing the flowers with varnish, a diluted antiquing medium is applied and wiped back immediately. This settles into crevices and highlights the sculpted details.

The antique is also brushed lightly around the clay edges where they meet the glass, creating soft shadows that help the design stand out.

Step 7: Highlighting with Dry Brushing

A light dry brushing of Magnolia paint is applied to the high points of the flowers and leaves. This brightens the piece and enhances the layered texture without covering the details.

Step 8: Adding Sparkle

Small Diamond Dotz rhinestones are added around the embellishments using drops of Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish as adhesive. The stones create a subtle sparkle that catches the light without overwhelming the design.

Step 9: Final Wax Highlights

To finish, a White Pearl wax is carefully brushed onto the edges of the flower petals. This adds a soft shimmer and a refined finish.

Because wax is always the final step, it does not need to be sealed.

Step 10: Finishing Touches

To raise the candle inside the jar, small wooden finials are painted gold and glued to the base interior. This lifts the candle to the perfect height for display.

The finished lantern glows beautifully, combining texture, color, and sparkle into a piece that feels both elegant and handcrafted.
