Creating a Gilded Vintage Easter Plate: Reverse Decoupage for Beginners

We are excited to share the next plate in Mason Creations, etc. reverse decoupage plate series. Join us as we explore the process of creating a striking reverse decoupage silver gilded plate, designed with beginners in mind to introduce them to the captivating world of decoupage.

Before we get started with the detailed guide, make sure to watch the video below to witness the creation process in action.

Here are the steps to follow to create this Vintage Reverse Decoupage Gilded Easter Plate:

Step 1: Clean the Plate Start by ensuring your glass plate is free of dirt and fingerprints. A clean surface is key for a successful decoupage project. This can be done using a simple alcohol wipe. It's important not to have any dirt or fingerprints on the glass.

Step 2: Apply Primer Use Polyvine's multi-surface lacquer as a primer to create an ideal surface for paint and decoupage glue to adhere. This ensures durability. Glass is a very slippery medium, making it difficult to achieve good adhesion of glue or paint without applying a lacquer bond. Some paints, like Gesso or Chalk Paint, adhere well, but even these types of paints benefit from first priming the glass. This will prevent scratching and flaking in the future.

Step 3: Paint the Plate Donna uses Pentart silver paint, applying it with a sponge around the plate's dome and leaving the center clear. This technique prevents sharp lines, ensuring the paint blends seamlessly into the decoupage image. By keeping a circle in the middle of the plate clear, she creates a perfect spot for the decoupage image to be prominently displayed.

Step 4: Prepare and Apply the Rice Paper Select your rice paper design and shape it to fit within the plate's inner circle. For easier blending into the background paint, we suggest tearing the paper rather than cutting it. Apply the rice paper using Polyvine lacquer as the decoupage medium, ensuring it's completely saturated to prevent air bubbles. Donna selected an Easter motif for her rice paper, but there are many thousands of rice paper and napkin patterns available at DecoupageNapkins.com for your own project.

Step 5: Paint Crackle Finish Donna decided to create a vintage look by applying Pentart’s Fineline Crackle varnish around the plate's rim. This two-part system adds depth and character to the piece. You paint with the first part, let it dry for an hour, then apply the second part. As it dries, the cracking effect becomes visible. She then uses Pentart Antique Paste to accentuate the crackle finish by rubbing it on and wiping off the excess. The paste will settle into the cracks and enhance the effect. She sealed this part of the project with solvent-based Pentart Clear Varnish before adding the next layer of water based paints and varnishes.

Step 6: Paint the Bottom of the Plate Donna paints over the crackle effect and the decoupaged area of the plate with Dixie Belle White Chalk Paint. This not only highlights the pattern of the decoupage rice paper but also accentuates the crackle effect.

Step 7: Gild and Seal On the back of the plate, Donna applies Polyvine Size and allows it to dry for about 20 minutes. She then applies silver leaf sheets to gild the bottom of the plate, using a brush to apply the sheets and smooth out any bubbles. She then applies more Pentart Silver Paint around the edge of the plate, using her finger for better control. After it dries, she seals the entire plate with Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish for a durable finish. The Heavy Duty Wood Varnish is not only durable but also heat, water, and stain-resistant. It is also food-safe and eco-friendly, making it an excellent choice for final top coat protection for the plate.
