The holiday season is the perfect time to add a little extra charm to your home, and what better way to do that than with a custom Nutcracker Soap Dispenser? If you’re looking for a fun and easy craft to spruce up your kitchen or bathroom, this project is for you! Donna from Mason Creations has created an enchanting step-by-step tutorial that will guide you through creating this festive, functional piece. Ready to get started? Watch the video below and follow along!
Step 1: Prepare Your Jar
Start by cleaning a mason jar with alcohol to remove dirt and fingerprints. Apply Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer, a perfect primer for shiny surfaces, and let it dry overnight. This lacquer creates a bond to the glass jar, preparing it for paint layers. This helps to prevent paint from chipping and gives long lasting protection to your crafted jar.
Step 2: Paint Your Base
Mix tan and white paints to create a pale tan color. Paint the jar, using a sponge to add texture while avoiding the threaded neck. Blend darker tan at the top and bottom for an ombre effect.
Step 3: Create Your Nutcracker
Using Das Air-Dry Clay and molds, craft a nutcracker and tiny ornaments. Freeze the filled molds for easy release. Attach the molded shapes to the jar with tacky glue while the clay is still wet, pressing gently to maintain details.
Step 4: Fill Gaps with Grout
Fill any spaces between the clay and jar with premixed grout. Smooth it with a damp brush for a flawless finish.
Step 5: Varnish for Shine
Coat your jar with Polyvine Heavy-Duty Wood Varnish for a protective, food-safe, and glossy finish. Add multiple coats for extra depth, allowing one hour of drying time between each.
Step 6: Antique for Depth
Apply Pentart Antique Paste in umber tone to crevices for a dimensional effect. Wipe off the paste from smooth surfaces, leaving shadows to enhance the details.
Step 7: Highlight with Metallics
Use metallic wax rubs in shimmering colors like rose gold and white pearl to add elegance to your ornaments. Buff for a radiant shine.
Step 8: Assemble the Details
Attach a soap dispenser pump to the jar, then adorn the neck with gold and red cords for a festive touch. Use a gold ball chain to connect the ornaments, secured with a fine-tip tacky glue pen.
