The Secret to Seamless Decoupage and Paint Blending

With beautiful rice paper, seamless paint blending, shimmering gold ginkgo leaves, velvet accents, and vintage-inspired embellishments, this bottle looks like something you'd find in a designer home décor collection.

Also Needed
Empty wine bottle, rubbing alcohol, ribbon, decorative ball chain, charms, dotting tools, decorative cabinet knob, cork.
Step 1: Prepare the Glass Bottle
The bottle is first cleaned thoroughly using rubbing alcohol to remove fingerprints, oils, and residue.
Next, Polyvine Multi Surface Lacquer (Dead Flat) is applied over the entire bottle. This creates a gripping layer that allows paint, decoupage papers, and embellishments to adhere securely to glass surfaces.
For best results, the lacquer is allowed to dry overnight.
Step 2: Create a Bright Decoupage Base
The entire bottle is painted using Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Cotton.
A white background is essential whenever you plan to apply napkins or rice paper. White keeps the colors bright and true, while darker backgrounds can dull the image and reduce detail.
A sponge dauber is used to apply the paint because it provides excellent coverage with minimal brush marks.
Step 3: Prepare the Rice Paper
The beautiful floral rice paper images are separated using a water brush to remove factory-cut edges.
Additional background paper is removed wherever possible so the image conforms more naturally to the curved bottle. Small relief cuts are made along rounded areas to prevent wrinkles and allow the paper to overlap smoothly.
Step 4: Apply the Decoupage Images
The rice paper is positioned on the bottle and adhered using Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish (Satin).
Because rice paper is porous, the varnish can be brushed directly over the image, allowing it to soak through and bond securely to the surface underneath.
A lightly misted piece of plastic is pressed over the paper to remove bubbles and wrinkles while protecting the delicate image.
Step 5: Seal Before Paint Blending
After the images dry, a generous coat of varnish is applied over all decoupaged areas.
This is an important step because paint blending works best when the edges of the paper have been sealed. The sealed surface allows paint to glide smoothly across the paper and blend into surrounding areas.
Step 6: Blend Paint into the Design
This is where the project truly begins to look custom.
Donna uses Dixie Belle Drop Cloth as the primary background color because it naturally matches the tones already present in the rice paper.
Additional custom colors are mixed using:
- Pentart Purple
- Pentart Eggplant
- Dark Gray
- Drop Cloth as the base tone
Using a sponge, the colors are lightly dabbed around and onto the paper itself. Rather than fully covering the surface, the paint is applied in translucent layers that allow portions of the original image to show through.
This technique helps the paint and decoupage blend together seamlessly, making the image appear painted directly onto the bottle.
Step 7: Add Gold Details
After sealing the blended paint, fine gold accents are added throughout the design.
Using a nail art brush, Donna traces delicate lines already present within the rice paper image. Gold dots are also added using a dotting tool to highlight tiny details throughout the artwork.
These subtle metallic accents add elegance without overpowering the original design.
Step 8: Create the Ginkgo Leaf Embellishments
The dimensional details are made using Das air-dry clay and silicone molds.
The clay is:
- Pressed into molds
- Smoothed with water
- Frozen for approximately 20 minutes
- Removed immediately after freezing
- Cleaned up while still partially frozen
Freezing helps preserve all the delicate details while allowing the pieces to release cleanly from the mold.
Step 9: Attach the Clay Leaves
The ginkgo leaves are attached while still damp using Aleene’s Tacky Glue.
Because the clay remains flexible, the leaves naturally conform to the curved neck of the bottle as they dry. Some leaves overlap one another, creating movement and visual interest.
Any excess glue is immediately removed using a damp brush.
Step 10: Paint the Embellishments
Once dry, the clay leaves are painted using Pentart Delicate Gold.
Donna carefully checks the leaves from multiple angles to ensure every detail is covered. Metallic paints can sometimes reveal missed areas after drying, so inspecting the project from all sides is important.
Step 11: Create a Custom Antiquing Glaze
Rather than using traditional brown antique medium, Donna creates a custom glaze designed specifically for the colors used in the project.
The antiquing mixture includes:
- Glazing Medium
- Purple Paint
- Eggplant Paint
- Dark Gray Paint
- Black Paint
- Water
Because these are the same colors used in the paint blending process, the antique glaze perfectly complements the overall color palette.
Step 12: Antique the Leaves
The custom glaze is brushed over the leaves and surrounding areas.
Working in small sections, the glaze is immediately wiped back using a soft cloth. The satin varnish underneath allows the glaze to remain in the crevices while wiping cleanly from raised areas.
This technique adds depth, shadows, and dimension that make the embellishments look much more realistic.
Step 13: Seal and Highlight
After antiquing dries, the entire bottle receives a final protective coat of varnish.
Then Redesign Decor Wax in Eternal Gold is lightly applied to the raised portions of the leaves. The wax catches only the highest points, creating a beautiful metallic shimmer while preserving the darker shadows underneath.
Step 14: Add the Finishing Touches
The finishing details bring everything together beautifully.
A coordinating purple velvet ribbon is wrapped around the bottle neck to hide the threads. Decorative ball chain and dangling charms add movement and elegance.
Finally, a decorative cabinet knob is attached to a cork and used as a custom bottle topper, completing the luxurious designer look.
The finished bottle is elegant, dimensional, and full of rich detail. Between the seamless paint blending, shimmering gold leaves, velvet accents, and decorative charms, it's hard to believe this project began as a simple empty wine bottle.
