Sometimes the most impressive home décor pieces begin with the simplest supplies. In this stunning project, a plain glass fishbowl is transformed into an elegant faux chinoiserie bowl using reverse decoupage, beautiful rice paper, shimmering gold leaf, and a few carefully chosen finishing techniques.

Fish bowl, sponge.
Step 1: Prepare the Glass Surface
The project begins by thoroughly cleaning the inside of the fishbowl with rubbing alcohol. Removing oils, fingerprints, and residue ensures that all subsequent products adhere properly.
Next, Polyvine Multi Surface Lacquer (Dead Flat) is brushed onto the interior of the bowl. This important preparation step creates a strong bond on slick surfaces such as glass, ceramic, plastic, and metal, making it possible for paints and decoupage papers to adhere securely.
Allow the lacquer to dry overnight before proceeding.
Step 2: Prepare the Rice Paper Design
Paint the inside bottom of the fishbowl in Pentart Paint in the color Gold. Allow the paint to dry for 1 hour.
For this project, Donna uses a beautiful Asian-inspired chinoiserie rice paper scene featuring pagodas, trees, and landscape details.
Because the fishbowl narrows toward the top and bottom, strategic cuts are made throughout the paper. Small slits are carefully cut around trees, bushes, and architectural elements so the paper can overlap naturally as it curves inside the bowl.
Unlike many decoupage projects where edges are torn and blended, this design relies on precise cuts to preserve the artwork and maintain crisp image details.
Step 3: Test Fit the Design
Before applying adhesive, the paper is test-fitted inside the bowl.
Additional relief cuts are added where necessary to prevent wrinkles and help the paper lie flat against the curved glass surface. Careful fitting at this stage helps achieve the smooth, seamless appearance that makes reverse decoupage look so professional.
Step 4: Apply the First Rice Paper Layer
Using Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish, the first section of rice paper is applied directly to the interior glass surface.
Since rice paper is porous, the varnish is brushed over the top of the paper, allowing it to soak through and bond securely to the glass beneath. Air bubbles are worked out using a soft brush until the image lies perfectly flat.
Once dry, excess paper extending beyond the rim is removed using medium-grit sandpaper for a clean professional edge.
Step 5: Add Additional Image Panels
The second section of rice paper is installed using the same process.
Before adding the next panel, white paint is carefully applied behind the edge of the first image. This prevents overlapping layers from showing through one another and helps maintain a seamless appearance when viewed from the outside of the bowl.
Step 6: Brighten the Images
Once all rice paper sections are secured and sealed, the interior of the bowl is painted white.
This step is extremely important in reverse decoupage. White paint reflects light through the image, keeping colors bright and vibrant. Dark backing colors can cause decoupage images to appear muddy or dull, while white helps every detail stand out beautifully.
Two coats are applied to ensure complete coverage.
Step 7: Prepare for Gold Leafing
After the white paint dries, the entire interior of the bowl is coated with Polyvine Metal Leaf Size.
This specialized adhesive dries clear and tacky, creating the perfect surface for applying metal flakes. Donna also extends the adhesive around the rim and lip of the bowl for a fully gilded finish.
Allow the adhesive to dry until tacky before moving on.
Step 8: Apply Gold Metal Flakes
Now comes the transformation that gives this project its luxurious appearance.
Gold metal flakes are pressed into all adhesive-covered areas and gently burnished into place. Excess flakes are brushed away and saved for future projects.
The result is a rich metallic finish that resembles distressed antique gold rather than ordinary paint. The reflective gold background adds depth and elegance to the chinoiserie scene while helping disguise any minor imperfections inside the bowl.
Step 9: Gild the Bottom
Originally, the plan was to paint the bowl's bottom gold. However, Donna decides to continue the gilded effect and applies gold flakes to the base as well.
This creates a cohesive finish throughout the entire project and adds even more luxury to the final piece.
Step 10: Clean the Exterior
After the gilding process is complete, any stray gold flakes are removed from the exterior glass surface using a dry kitchen sponge.
The scrubby side loosens stubborn flakes while the sponge side wipes the glass clean, revealing the beautiful reverse decoupage design beneath.
Step 11: Apply the Final Protective Finish
To protect the project, the entire interior, rim, and bottom are sealed using Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish.

Two coats are applied, allowing one hour of drying time between coats.
The Finished Faux Chinoiserie Bowl
The completed project looks like something that could easily be displayed in a luxury home décor boutique. The combination of reverse decoupage, delicate chinoiserie artwork, and distressed gold leaf creates a timeless decorative piece with incredible depth and elegance.
Best of all, it began as a simple Dollar Tree fishbowl.
