A Soft Floral Makeover for Your Sneakers
Have you ever looked at a plain pair of white sneakers and imagined they could be something beautiful?
This project turns simple canvas shoes into wearable art using delicate floral rice paper, soft finishes, and just a touch of sparkle. The result is a dreamy, custom look that feels both handcrafted and completely unique.
Be sure to watch the full video tutorial below before you begin.
Step 1: Preparing the Rice Paper
The floral rice paper is carefully torn using a water brush to remove excess background and create soft, blendable edges. Tearing instead of cutting allows the images to melt into the fabric naturally rather than sitting on top of it.
Two sheets are used—one for each shoe—to ensure enough floral elements for both sides.
Step 2: Decoupaging onto Fabric
Because canvas absorbs product, Polyvine Decorators Varnish (Gloss) is used as the adhesive. This formula is ideal for fabric, offering flexibility, water resistance, and durability.
The varnish is applied generously to the shoe, and the rice paper is laid in place. As the paper is pressed down, more varnish is brushed over the top to ensure strong adhesion.
Additional elements like bees, ladybugs, and butterflies are added to bring the design to life. Small images are carefully placed along the sides and tongue of the shoe.
A lightly misted plastic sheet is placed over the surface and smoothed with a paper towel to remove bubbles and wrinkles.
The shoes are left to dry for several hours.
Step 3: Building Protection Layers
Once dry, a second coat of gloss varnish is applied over all the decoupaged areas. This layer adds durability and protects the delicate rice paper design.
To soften the appearance, a final coat of Polyvine Decorators Varnish (Dead Flat) is applied. This removes shine and gives the shoes a soft, natural matte finish that blends beautifully with the fabric.
Step 4: Adding Decorative Details
For sparkle, Diamond Dotz rhinestones are applied using small dots of glue. These iridescent accents catch the light and add just the right amount of shine without overpowering the design.
Step 5: Finishing with Gold Edging
To complete the look, Pentart White Gold paint is applied along the edges of the shoe using a sponge dauber. The flat edge of the sponge creates a clean, consistent line.
A thin coat of varnish is added over the gold to seal and protect it.
Step 6: Comfort and Final Touches
Since the varnish can stiffen fabric slightly, any areas that touch the skin—such as the heel—are lightly sanded with fine grit sandpaper to restore softness.
Elastic pink laces are added to match the floral tones and make the shoes easy to slip on and off.
The finished sneakers are soft, wearable, and full of personality—proof that even everyday items can become something special.
