Milk bottle gilded with clay and gold flakes and a decoupage napkin floral.

Decoupage Magic: Transform a Glass Bottle with Gilded Napkin Art

Have you ever looked at a simple glass bottle and thought, "I could turn this into something beautiful?" If so, you're in the right place! Today, we’re diving into a stunning mixed media project, guided by our talented affiliate, Donna from Mason Creations etc..

Using a combination of decoupage, gold gilding, and air-dry clay, Donna transforms an ordinary milk bottle into a breathtaking decorative piece. Whether you're a seasoned crafter or just starting out, this step-by-step tutorial will walk you through every technique to create your own masterpiece.

Watch the video below and follow along as we bring this vision to life!

Step 1: Prepping the Bottle for Paint & Decoupage

Before starting, make sure your glass surface is clean. Wipe it down with an alcohol wipe to remove any dust and oils. Next, apply Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer (Dead Flat Finish)—this acts as a primer, helping paint and glue adhere to the bottle without chipping or peeling.

Once dry, paint the bottle with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Cotton. A light background ensures that the decoupage napkin stays vibrant instead of dull or muddy. Apply two coats, letting each dry in between.

Step 2: Adding Luxurious Gold Leaf Gilding

Gold accents give this project a rich, elegant feel. To add them:

  • Paint Polyvine Metal Leaf Size onto the neck and base of the bottle, creating thin border strips.
  • Let it dry for about 15 minutes until tacky.
  • Press gold gilding flakes onto the adhesive and use a soft brush to smooth and remove excess.

This simple step instantly elevates the look of your project!

Step 3: Prepping & Applying the Decoupage Napkin

Choose a beautiful decoupage napkin that fits your theme. Peel away the two back layers, keeping only the top printed layer. Use a water brush to tear the edges rather than cutting—this helps the napkin blend seamlessly.

For application, start in the center and brush Polyvine Heavy-Duty Wood Varnish over the napkin, working outward. Instead of smoothing with your fingers, use a damp plastic bag—this trick prevents wrinkles and bubbles!

Step 4: Enhancing the Design with Clay Embellishments

To add texture and detail, use Das Air-Dry Clay and a decorative mold.

  • Press clay into the mold and freeze for 20 minutes for easy release.
  • While still soft, attach it to the bottle using Tacky Glue, molding it to the curved surface.
  • Let it dry overnight.

Once dry, apply Polyvine Metal Leaf Size, wait until tacky, then add more gold gilding flakes to highlight the embellishments.

Step 5: Sealing & Antiquing for a Vintage Look

Once everything is dry, seal the entire bottle with Polyvine Heavy-Duty Wood Varnish. This not only protects the design but also preps the surface for antiquing.

To create an aged look:

  • Mix glazing medium with a drop of paint.
  • Apply over the clay embellishments and gently wipe away, leaving color in the crevices for depth.

Step 6: The Final Protective Coats

To ensure long-lasting beauty:

And there you have it—a beautifully decoupaged milk bottle with gold accents and elegant clay details!
