Crafters, You’ll Love This Smashed Can Wall Pocket Decoupage!
With a little creativity and the right decoupage supplies, you can turn an ordinary can into a gorgeous pocket planter! Step 1: Prepping Your Can
Start by removing the label and thoroughly washing your tin can. If your can has a removable bottom, you're in luck! Use a special side-cutting can opener to avoid sharp edges. Now, take a hammer and flatten the bottom slightly—this helps create the signature pocket shape.
For a rustic hanging effect, drill two small holes near the top for the hanger. No drill? No worries! Hot glue can be an alternative for attaching ribbon or twine.
Step 2: Priming for Perfection
Before adding any paint or paper, apply Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer. This creates a smooth, grippy surface that ensures paint and decoupage glue adhere beautifully.
Once dry, brush on a coat of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Cotton, a bright white that allows the colors of your napkin to remain vivid and crisp.
Step 3: Choosing & Prepping Your Napkin
Select a floral napkin that fits your shabby chic vision. Separate the top printed layer from the backing using the water brush method—just run a damp brush along the edges and gently tear. This soft edge blends seamlessly into the background, making your design look effortless and natural.
Step 4: Flawless Decoupage with the Water Method
Lay your napkin face-down on a plastic sheet and lightly mist it with water. This technique prevents wrinkles by allowing the fibers to expand before application.
Next, apply Polyvine Decorators Varnish to your can—this doubles as both an adhesive and a sealer. Flip the napkin onto the can and smooth it down using a paper towel over the plastic sheet. Carefully peel off the plastic, leaving a wrinkle-free, perfectly adhered design.
Step 5: Adding Clay Embellishments
To elevate your piece, press DAS clay into silicone molds to create delicate decorative flourishes. Freeze the mold for 20 minutes to ensure easy removal, then attach the clay pieces to the can using Aileen’s Tacky Glue.
Once dry, paint the clay with Dixie Belle Drop Cloth Chalk Paint, blending it seamlessly into the design.
Step 6: Antiquing & Distressing for a Vintage Look
For that aged, shabby chic charm, create an antique glaze by mixing a small amount of brown chalk paint with a glazing medium. Brush it on, then wipe away excess, allowing the pigment to settle into the grooves and textures.
To highlight raised areas, dry brush a little white paint across the surface, adding subtle dimension.
Step 7: Sealing & Finishing Touches
Once your paint is dry, apply Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish (Satin Finish) for durability. If you prefer a completely matte vintage look, add a final layer of Polyvine Decorators Varnish in Dead Flat Finish.
String twine through the holes and tie small bows for a sweet, farmhouse-style hanger. Inside, add a small piece of florist foam, cover it with moss, and arrange artificial or dried flowers to match your napkin’s design.
