Create a Magical Fairy Bottle with Decoupage and Molds
Ever wonder how to turn an ordinary glass bottle into an enchanted fairy realm? Grab your clay and brushes, because today, we’re diving into something truly magical!
In this week’s featured tutorial, our talented crafting partner Donna from Mason Creations etc. walks us through how to create a stunning fairy-themed bottle using decoupage and mixed media techniques. This fairy bottle combines texture, shimmer, and whimsical charm. Intermediate skill is helpful, but beginners can follow along step-by-step. Watch the video below and craft along!
Step-by-Step: How to Create a Fairy Bottle with Decoupage and Clay
Step 1: Prep Your Bottle Start by cleaning your bottle with an alcohol wipe to remove dust and oils. Then brush on Polyvine’s Multi-Surface Lacquer in Dead Flat Finish to eliminate shine and create a surface that holds paint and decoupage materials securely. Let dry overnight.
Step 2: Shape and Apply the Rice Paper Donna uses our “Druid Forest” rice paper, a moody, mystical forest background perfect for fairy scenes. Tear the edges with a water brush for a feathery blend. Apply it using Polyvine Decorators Varnish, which dries crystal clear and works beautifully as a decoupage adhesive.
To ensure smooth placement on the domed bottle, mist a piece of plastic with water and gently press it over the paper. Let everything dry thoroughly before moving on.
Step 3: Paint the Back Once dry, coat the back of the paper with Dixie Belle’s Cotton chalk paint. Always use a light base to keep your rice paper image vivid. Avoid the feathered edges to maintain a soft blend.
Step 4: Add Clay Details with Molds Donna uses both Designer and Accent Silicone Molds sold on our site. Press Das air-dry clay into the molds and freeze them for easier removal. For shallow molds, she switches to cream paste for crisp details. Attach the clay pieces while still soft using tacky glue, so they form to the bottle shape as they dry.
Step 5: Color and Detail Mix Pentart paints like Pine Green, Black, and Leaf Green to custom-match the background. Donna paints mushrooms, ferns, and the fairy with various Pentart shades including Dark Sand, Mallow, Country Rose, and Vintage Green. She uses dry brushing and layered blending for soft shading and highlights.
Step 6: Antiquing for Depth Use Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish in Satin to gloss areas you plan to antique. Then mix a custom antiquing glaze using your background paint and glazing medium. Brush it over the fairy and floral embellishments, then wipe off. This leaves pigment in the crevices and makes the detail pop.
Step 7: Add Glow and Shine Donna adds shimmer with Dixie Belle’s Pearlescent Glaze on the wings and wax rubs in mint, pearl, and gold on various accents. These finishes add a subtle magical glow.
Step 8: Finish with Texture and Sparkle For the final texture, mix Pentart 3D Powder into your leftover paint and pat it onto the bottle. This gives the surface a mystical, stone-like finish. Add Diamond Dotz with a dab of Polyvine varnish as the adhesive, for some sparkle.
Step 9: Light It Up! Donna finishes the bottle with a cork that has a built-in rechargeable light and adds a painted clay leaf to the top using the same color palette to tie everything together.
Donna’s creativity and attention to detail are what make this tutorial so special. Her use of color, texture, and layering turns simple supplies into a magical keepsake.
