Also Needed

Journal, wooden cutouts, hot glue, rhinestones, chrome pen, organza ribbon.

Step 1: Preparing the Journal

The journal begins with a coat of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Cotton applied to the front, back, and spine. Painting the surface white is an important step—it allows the rice paper colors to stay vibrant and true.

A sponge is used to apply the paint, giving a soft texture while laying down even coverage. Once dry, the journal is ready for decoupage.

Step 2: Preparing the Rice Paper

A moody rose rice paper is chosen for this project. Using a water brush, the edges are torn rather than cut. This helps the image blend seamlessly into the painted background.

The main floral image is placed on the front, while a smaller coordinating piece is added to the back so the entire journal feels finished and cohesive.

Step 3: Decoupaging the Design

The rice paper is adhered using Polyvine Decorators Varnish, proving that any Polyvine formula can work beautifully as a decoupage adhesive.

The varnish is brushed underneath and over the paper, pressing it down smoothly. Once dry, the edges are sanded downward to remove excess paper and create a clean finish.

Step 4: Sealing for Protection

A coat of Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish (Satin) is applied over the front and back. This adds durability and creates the perfect surface for additional techniques like paint blending and antiquing.

Step 5: Creating the Moody Background

Using a sponge, multiple Pentart paint colors—including gray, pine green, black, and off-white—are layered around the edges of the design.

The darker tones are concentrated along the outer edges, while lighter tones blend inward toward the roses. This creates a soft, moody background that enhances the floral image.

Step 6: Faux Crackle Texture

To add subtle texture, black ink is applied using a silicone stamp in random areas around the background. This creates a faux crackle effect that adds age and character without overpowering the design.

Step 7: Metallic Edges

The edges of the journal are finished with Pentart Platinum paint using a sponge dauber. This technique keeps the metallic detail clean and controlled while adding a refined touch.

Step 8: Adding Embellishments

Wooden cutouts like an Eiffel Tower and vintage keys are painted with Pentart Rose Gold and attached using Aleene’s Tacky Glue with a touch of hot glue for quick hold.

These details give the journal a subtle Paris-inspired theme.

Step 9: Clay Details for Dimension

Using Das air-dry clay, decorative mold pieces are created, frozen for easy release, and attached while still damp. This allows them to conform perfectly to the journal’s surface.

Once dry, the clay is painted rose gold to match the other embellishments.

Step 10: Antiquing for Depth

A custom antiquing glaze is mixed using FolkArt antiquing medium, black paint, and glazing medium. This mixture is brushed over the embellishments and wiped back immediately.

The glaze settles into the details, adding depth and toning down the metallic finish for a cohesive look. Another coat of varnish is added to protect the paint and antiquing.

Step 11: Final Highlights

The finishing touches bring everything together:

  • White pearl wax highlights the clay details
  • Rhinestones add sparkle to embellishments
  • A chrome pen adds subtle metallic shine to raised edges
  • A rose gold organza ribbon replaces the original closure

These small details add just the right amount of shimmer and personality.

The finished journal feels layered, textured, and full of character—something you’d expect to find tucked away in a vintage shop.
